π Isn't Just for Circles, It's Building the Materials of Tomorrow

It’s March, Pi month again. Let me talk more about π and how it has shaped some of our everyday life (mostly hidden in plain sight).

Most of us know π as 3.14159…, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. But nature has been embedding π into its architecture for millions of years — and materials scientists are finally taking notes.

Consider blood flow. Poiseuille's Law reveals that fluid flow through a tube scales with the fourth power of radius, a relationship built entirely around π. Biomimetic engineers used this exact principle to design microfluidic artificial blood vessels that replicate the efficiency of our circulatory system at the microscale.

Or look at the mantis shrimp's dactyl club. Its internal fibers rotate in a helicoidal (Bouligand) pattern, layers of circular fiber orientations, each twisted by a π-derived pitch angle, generating impact resistance that rivals Kevlar. Researchers have since replicated this geometry in 3D-printed composite materials used in aerospace components and body armor.

Even the cochlea, our snail-shaped inner ear, spirals through roughly 2.5 turns defined by π, a geometry so acoustically efficient that it directly inspired improved cochlear implant designs.

π isn't just mathematics. It's nature's structural blueprint and we're only beginning to copy it.
